Your customers are asking AI. Is your business in the answer?
AI cannot recommend a business it cannot read. OpenAEO shows you what assistants actually see on your site, gives you the files that fix it, then tracks whether you get named in the answer. Free on one site, no signup, about 5 seconds.

What to fix first
Free, right now
All four fix files for your site: robots.txt, llms.txt, the JSON-LD and a rewritten opening. Yours to keep, no signup. One of those four is speculative and we mark it as such: llms.txt is unproven, which is why we score it 0.5 of 100. Why we still ship it.
Solo, $29 a month
The files tell you what to change. Solo re-scans monthly so you know it stayed fixed, applies the fixes to a page you paste, and asks 3 assistants your buyers' questions each week to see whether you get named.
Agencies and in-house teams: the check that matters here is the one nobody else runs. A CDN can refuse an AI crawler while robots.txt says yes, silently, on any client site, any week. Business tracks 5 sites and re-crawls weekly. Compare the plans.

the audit fetches your pages as each of these and records the status each one got. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token rather than a crawler, so it is read, not fetched
Googlebot gets a 200. ClaudeBot gets a 403. Same page, same second.
We asked nytimes.com for its homepage as each AI crawler in turn. The 3 that feed search were served. All 5 that feed AI assistants were refused at the edge before they saw a byte. None of those refusals is in their robots.txt, so a checker that reads that file will tell you all 5 are welcome.
200 means the page was handed over. 403 means the door was shut, by the network sitting in front of the site, before the page itself was ever consulted. That is why no edit to robots.txt undoes one.
A neutral client that identifies itself as ours was served too, and so was an ordinary browser. That is what tells us the rule keys on the crawler's name rather than on us being unfamiliar, and it is the difference between a finding and a guess. See every request, the method, and what a spoofed fetch cannot prove.

THE PROBLEM
AI cannot recommend what it cannot understand.
People ask AI what to buy, who to hire and who to trust, and a strong business can be left out of the answer simply because an assistant could not work out what it does. The goal here is not to manufacture authority. It is to make the authority you already have easy for a machine to recognize.
Search gave businesses rankings. AI gives people answers.
A list of links let you compete for a position on it. An answer either names you or it does not, and that is decided before anyone sees your design.
Three questions decide whether you make it into the answer, and each one is settled by a different part of your site.
Does AI know you exist?
Retrieval gates decide this. If an assistant cannot fetch or parse the page, nothing else matters.
Does it understand why you are relevant?
Answer layer and schema decide this. Specifics get quoted, adjectives get skipped.
Is it confident enough to name you?
Off-site consensus decides this. Independent sources agreeing about you is what turns a mention into a recommendation.

HOW IT WORKS
See what AI can reach, fix what it cannot read, then measure whether assistants start citing you.
The whole path, start to finish. Remy walks the same three steps below, slowly and with the stakes attached.
01 · SEE
What AI actually reads
Paste your address. We ask the AI crawlers for your page the way they would, and tell you what each one got back. Free, no signup, about 5 seconds.
8 crawlers fetched · 5 retrieval gates · 8 headline checks · one score out of 100
02 · FIX
One file that controls access, one that helps them read you
You get the actual files, not a report telling you to get them. For most sites it is two small files and one clearer paragraph, and none of it touches your design.
robots.txt · llms.txt · JSON-LD · answer layer · paste it, or let the free MCP server write it into your repo
03 · CITED
Whether it actually worked
We ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, every week, and tell you whether they say your name or somebody else's.
ChatGPT · Claude · Gemini · Perplexity · tracked over time. The score is the input. Being cited is the outcome.
The story above is one business. This is the list. Every number here is computed by code you can read, and a check fails the build if this page and the code stop agreeing.
Crawlers that prove who they are
Anyone can put GPTBot in a user agent. We check the address against the ranges the operator publishes, and against forward-confirmed reverse DNS where they document one. A request is verified, outside the published range, or unverifiable, and nothing is called an impostor without evidence that it is one.
18 crawlers tracked · 10 with a published range feed · 3 with a reverse DNS convention
How much of your AI traffic is real
Read your server log and we report the share of requests claiming to be an AI crawler that genuinely came from one, and how that compares with everyone else we measure. The log is parsed on your own machine and never leaves it. What travels is two integers.
your rate · the median across the corpus · nothing about which pages were hit
A score that says what it could not measure
Forty-nine weighted checks across six dimensions. Anything we could not measure is named and left out of the total rather than counted against you, so the number is over what was actually looked at.
49 checks · 100 points · 6 dimensions · scored over what we could measure
Off-site reputation, measured by asking
Reviews, directories, forums and press live on other people's platforms, so no page audit can see them. We ask the assistants instead and read the pages they cite. A confident answer with no sources counts as unknown, because a model will happily describe a business that does not exist.
7 questions · 17 of the rubric's points · verdicts read from citations, not prose

APPLY THEM AUTOMATICALLY
Point your coding agent at your site. It writes the fixes into your repo.
OpenAEO ships an MCP server. Add it to Claude Code, Cursor, or any MCP client, and your assistant can audit the live site, generate robots.txt, llms.txt and JSON-LD, and write them into your project as files you review like any other diff. It is open source, MIT licensed, and needs no API key and no account.
PATH 01 · FREE
You have the code
Your agent runs the audit, writes the two files into your static root, and adds the missing head elements to each page. You read the diff before anything lands.

PATH 02 · FREE
You have no code
On Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, WordPress, Shopify, Framer, Ghost or Carrd, it returns click-by-click steps for your platform's own admin, with the exact text to paste at each one.
aeo_fix_my_site
PATH 03 · SOLO $29
You want nothing installed
The hosted source fixer takes a page you paste and hands it back with the fixes applied. Same rewrite, in the browser, with your score tracked over time.
dashboard · no install
add it to Claude Codeone line
claude mcp add openaeo -- npx -y openaeo-audit mcp
For Cursor or any other client, the command is npx with args -y openaeo-audit mcp. Eight local tools, no key, no telemetry. Five more are hosted. Full setup and the tool reference.
The generated files carry bracketed placeholders where a real number belongs, and the server instructs the agent never to invent one. If it does not know your refund window or your review count, it asks you or leaves the bracket. A confident fabrication is the thing this product exists to catch.
THE ONE-PARAGRAPH VERSION
What answer engine optimization actually is
Answer engine optimization (AEO), also called generative engine optimization (GEO), is the practice of making a website structured and specific enough that an AI assistant can read it, understand it, trust it, and name it in an answer, the way search engine optimization once made a page rankable in a list of links. OpenAEO audits a site against five retrieval gates and eight headline checks in seconds, then returns the exact files and copy changes that can move it above the ship floor. The dashboard tracks those results over time, so you can see which way they are moving. A failed retrieval gate caps the score. If a page depends on JavaScript, blocks AI crawlers at the CDN, disallows bots in robots.txt, or contains unresolved placeholder text, an assistant may not be able to fetch, parse, or cite it at all. The audit is free for one site, requires no signup, and runs in seconds.
WHAT WE ACTUALLY SCORE
What the score is made of, and what it cannot tell you.
One OpenAEO audit covers both AEO and GEO. No agreed standard exists for scoring this yet, so these are our checks and our weighting, published in full and open source so you can disagree with them specifically rather than take the number on faith. The retrieval gates come first because they cap everything else. A site can look crawlable in robots.txt and still return a 403 response to every AI bot at the CDN. OpenAEO fetches your pages as each bot, from the edge, and checks what actually comes back.
GATE 01
Renders without JavaScript
The important text exists in the HTML a crawler receives, not only after a browser bundle runs.
GATE 02
Bots reach the edge
Live per-bot fetches reveal whether CDNs and firewalls are blocking AI crawlers.
GATE 03
robots.txt allows
Current AI agents are checked against an updated registry rather than a stale copy-and-paste list.
GATE 04
Indexed where it matters
Several assistants rely on search indexes, including Bing. If the site is absent, it may remain invisible.
GATE 05
No unresolved placeholder text
Verification markers and unfinished live copy cap the score. Drafts do not receive a passing grade.
ARetrieval & index
Can a machine get the page at all, and does it come back complete?
· static render / SSR diff
· per-bot edge response codes
· sitemap + llms.txt hygiene
· canonical correctness
BSchema
Structured data that mirrors what's visible. Floating schema is the single most common failure we see.
· Organization + WebSite
· Product / Offer with price
· FAQPage matches visible Q&A
· truthful dateModified
CAnswer layer
Whether there is anything on the page an assistant can lift and quote without hedging.
· target answered in first 100 words
· self-contained passages, entity-led
· sequential H1 → H2 → H3
· visible freshness date
DPage coverage
One page per real buyer question: pricing, comparison, use case, proof.
· query → page mapping
· transparent pricing page
· comparison / alternatives page
· reviews with named sources
EOff-site consensus
Assistants trust agreement between independent sources more than anything you say about yourself.
· community mentions, earned only
· third-party roundup placement
· reviews + profile completeness
· NAP and entity graph match
FMeasurement
Whether you'd even know if it worked. Most sites can't tell.
· AI-referral traffic segmented
· weekly citation testing
· launch-day baseline captured
· quarterly re-audit scheduled
Unverified facts get flagged, not guessed. Anything we can't confirm ships as a VERIFY marker in your copy and schema, and unresolved markers cap your score, so placeholder text can't ride a passing grade.
Off-site counts too. Assistants cross-reference. Community threads, third-party roundups, reviews and a consistent entity graph carry roughly a quarter of the score, because they carry roughly that much of the answer.
Questions people actually ask
What is AI visibility?+
AI visibility describes whether AI assistants can find, understand, accurately describe, and cite your business when people ask questions related to your products, services, category, location, or competitors.
What makes a business legible to AI?+
A legible business has accessible pages, clear positioning, specific facts, consistent business information, useful structured data, and credible supporting evidence. An assistant should be able to determine who you are, what you offer, who you serve, and why you are trustworthy.
What is AEO, in one sentence?+
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your site structured and specific enough that an AI assistant can read it, trust it, and name your business in an answer, the way SEO made a page rankable in search results.
Is this just SEO with a new name?+
No. SEO and AEO overlap, but they optimize for different outputs. SEO helps pages rank in a list of links. AEO helps AI systems access, interpret, cite, compare, and potentially recommend a business inside a generated answer.
What does the audit actually check?+
Five retrieval gates and eight headline checks, and every one of them is computed live rather than looked up. The gates are fetched per crawler from the edge. The checks read the page itself: whether it renders without JavaScript, whether your FAQ schema mirrors text a human can actually see, whether the freshness date is true. There is no larger hidden rubric: this is what runs.
How long until my business gets cited?+
There is no guaranteed timeline. Technical blockers can often be fixed immediately, but assistants may need time to recrawl, re-index, and build confidence from independent sources. OpenAEO tracks the curve instead of pretending every change produces an instant result.
Do I need a developer?+
Not always. Many fixes are copy-paste files or content changes. Some platforms, CDNs, firewalls, and custom sites may require administrator access or a developer. Business plans can turn findings into tickets a developer can ship.
Does it work on Squarespace, Shopify, and Webflow?+
The audit works on any public website OpenAEO can fetch. The exact implementation steps vary by platform, theme, hosting provider, and CDN.
Can you guarantee I will show up in ChatGPT?+
No. No outside company controls what an AI system includes in an answer. OpenAEO identifies the signals and blockers that affect legibility, tracks citations over time, and shows where your business is being overlooked.
Can an AI agent apply the fixes for me?+
There are two ways. Free and open source: the MCP server lets your coding agent write robots.txt, llms.txt and JSON-LD into your project as files you review before committing. On Solo at $29 per month: the hosted source fixer takes a page you paste in the browser and returns it with the fixes applied, with nothing to install and no access to your repository. Generated files use bracketed placeholders for facts the tool cannot know, and the server instructs the agent never to invent a price, a review count or a date.
How much does OpenAEO cost?+
Free is $0 for one site and includes the core audit. Solo is $29 per month for one site with automated rescans, source-level fixes, and a weekly citation test on 3 target prompts. Business is $39 per month for five sites with weekly citation tracking. Enterprise pricing is customized.
What counts as a passing AEO score?+
There is no industry standard for this yet. 72 out of 100 is OpenAEO's own threshold, chosen because below it a site is usually failing something structural rather than something cosmetic. Treat the number as directional. What it is actually good for is the list underneath it and whether that list gets shorter. The score is the input; citations are the outcome.
Does llms.txt actually do anything?+
Probably not yet, and we would rather say so than sell it to you. Independent measurement in May 2026 found 97% of llms.txt files received no AI crawler requests at all, and Google has stated it does not affect visibility or ranking. No major assistant has committed to reading it for its main product. We still generate it, for two reasons: it costs nothing to publish and it is trivially reversible if the standard goes nowhere. That is also why it is worth 0.5 points out of 100 in our rubric, the lowest weight of any check we score. Treat robots.txt, your CDN's crawler rules and the words on your pages as the work that matters; treat llms.txt as a cheap option on a standard that may never arrive. If that changes, this answer changes with it.
The instant audit runs on any URL you paste, on every plan, as often as you like. The number in each plan is how many sites it tracks: saved history, drift alerts, and runs you can compare.
